Who Needs BPM? Many CFOs Aren’t Convinced

Tuesday, January 16th, 2007
For all the talk and vendor marketing pieces pushing business performance management, with its promise of integrated data and dashboards, powerful analytics and ability to connect financial and planning applications, there are still a lot of CFOs and chief information officers who apparently need convincing. Tom Manley, senior vice president and CFO of Cognos, one of the BPM software market leaders, told an investor conference recently that "market opportunity" penetration appears to be no more than 20 to 25 percent.

Small Biz Software on the World Stage

Saturday, December 30th, 2006
HighOrbit wants to turn seat-of-the-pants management of everyday office tasks into standard computerized processes that can be tracked from end to end. The company, based out of Kevin LaFata's Oakville, Mo., home, makes software that automates the flow of work through a business, from the time a customer calls in an order until the product is shipped. It also can be used in hiring, tracking customer service calls, accounting and purchasing and sales and marketing.

A Good Time to Invest in Content Management

Monday, December 18th, 2006
Organizations are frittering away up to 10 percent of staff costs on wasted effort because employees can't find the information they need. That's the verdict of a report "Enterprise Search and Retrieval" from analyst Butler Group. Its study suggests that old search and discovery systems are hampering competitiveness and customer service at a time when technology exists to manage unstructured information. "Over 50 percent of staff costs are now allocated to employees performing so-called information work," says Richard Edwards, senior research analyst at Butler Group.

The Salesforce Train Keeps Rolling

Wednesday, December 13th, 2006
Salesforce.com is having a good year this quarter. That's not a typo, the company seems to be announcing a year's worth of new products in a very short time, though delivery for some of the announcements might stretch out to this time next year. This week, Salesforce announced what I think of as the other shoe, or the business side of the AppExchange and associated infrastructure. So far, the focus has been primarily on Salesforce's novel approach to building and deploying business applications.

Diving Deep Into the Process Pool

Sunday, December 10th, 2006
Reforming enterprise business processes to boost productivity requires isolating pain points through steady focus on the myriad users, partners, customers, and applications proliferating an enterprise. The latest silver bullet to enter the BPM chamber is BEA's ALBPM -- an already well-developed platform gained through BEA's acquisition of FuegoBPM Suite earlier this year. I found ALBPM offers process engineers the necessary firepower for targeting complex process flows with graphical, drag-and-drop development tools.

A CRM Thanksgiving: Optimism and Gratitude

Thursday, November 23rd, 2006
No longer having to hear that "CRM is dead" is one thing to be thankful for, says Brad Wilson, general manager of Microsoft Dynamics CRM. That was a talking point making the rounds a few years back, and it developed sudden and significant traction when it was echoed by an executive of one of the leading CRM vendors at an industry conference. No more though, Wilson notes. That idea is, well, dead. "Businesses are turning renewed focus to customer-facing systems that help them drive more consistent and mutually profitable relationships," he told CRM Buyer.
